NEW START DATE September 27th

Everyone can write poetry. In this course you will learn to create poetry that reflects your feelings, ideas, and experiences. Through guided exercises and practice you will discover the joy of putting thoughts on paper. There will be no difficult demands on form or structure but the course will focus, instead, on the power of language in a free verse format. This course is designed for those who want to look back on a lifetime of experiences and memories. Drinks and snacks included to ‘feed your creativity’.

If you've taken this class before, you are more than welcome to take it again and continue practicing your writing!

Linda Hallstrom

Linda Hallstrom enjoys writing poetry. She has worked as a high school English teacher, newspaper editor and columnist, and Community Relations Specialist for the Sioux Falls School District. She was recently inspired to share her appreciation of and passion for the benefits of poetic writing by the book "I Never Told Anybody" by Kenneth Koch. Look it up! Linda and Dr. Rosanne Kirts are also inspired by the example of Sarah Yerkes. Yerkes wrote her first poem at the age of 96 and published her first book of poetry at the age of 100. Kirts and Hallstrom believe that writing poetry can benefit anyone to become an enjoyable and meaningful craft. Yerkes referred to her new pastime as "chronic poetry" because it replaced her passion for Sudoku.

Dr. Rosanne Kirts

Dr. Rosanne Kirts was a teacher and administrator in the public school for 23 years and then an assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of South Dakota for 15 years. She retired in 2012. She was recently inspired to share her appreciation of and passion for the benefits of poetic writing by the book "I Never Told Anybody" by Kenneth Koch. Look it up!
