Pull up those sleeves and get ready to work with clay pottery! Using only the hands and simple tools, potter Sonja Hernandez will teach kids the basic techniques of handbuilding and guide them through several new projects each week to show off their skills! Start with clay basics, learn how to manipulate the clay and build simple pinch pots and slab bowls before picking a favorite from gnomes, bunnies, and castles to call your own! Experience a viewing of all the works of art after a bisque firing and learn how to glaze to finalize the pieces! Projects will be available for pick up at Community Education a week after the last class. Kids get to play - Parents get to keep their kitchen table clean! Win-win! Materials included for this 3 week class. Ages 7-12.

Sonja Hernandez has been working with clay professionally for over 20 years and loves to share her passion with the community. She grew up in Western North Carolina, steeped in the crafting traditions of the Southern Appalachians. She would often accompany her grandmother, an avid crafter, to the studios of artist friends, where Sonja would watch them work, enraptured. During high school, she sat at a potter’s wheel for the first time and was instantly hooked, deciding that if she must grow up and get a job she would be a potter. She later earned a Professional Craft Degree with a ceramics focus from Haywood Community College. For Sonja, working with clay fosters a sense of connection with the Earth, and provides a medium for her need to create objects that balance beauty, whimsy and function.
